The News on the Rialto is an annual publication devoted to providing an informational point of reference for scholars working on all aspects of Venetian studies, including the political, economic, social, religious, artistic, architectural, musical and literary history of the city, its overseas empire, and its mainland territories. Originally begun in 1978 by Prof. Alexander Cowan as a way to keep scholars of Venice up to date on the work of colleagues throughout the world, the News on the Rialto has in the intervening years established itself as a significant tool of communication between scholars and academics in the expanding field of Venetian studies. Besides keeping those in the Venetian scholarly community informed about each other’s current research and publications, the News also provides announcements that allow scholars to carry out their research more effectively, publishing the schedules of the city’s more than twenty libraries and archives, as well as information about upcoming conferences and other matters of general interest related to scholars working on Venice.
This website is intended to supplement the annual newsletter, and to provide a forum for up-to-the-minute information of interest to scholars of Venice, as well as to facilitate the subscription process. Please use this site to subscribe and to update your annual entry. Please also send details of upcoming conferences or seminars, book announcements, news from the archives, and other information that may be of interest to the community of Venetian scholars to notr@byu.edu.
The print and web versions of the News on the Rialto are under the editorship of Professor Eric Dursteler of Brigham Young University. Written inquiries may be sent either via email to Notr@byu.edu or via regular mail to
